Introduction to Canoeing & Bushcraft

A 3 day canoe trip in southern Scotland which will introduce you to journeying by canoe, creating wild camps and a range of bushcraft skills.

Course Description

On this course, based in the beautiful Dumfries and Galloway area of southern Scotland, we will guide you through canoe and bushcraft skills that will enable you to have a better understanding of using the canoe as a journeying tool to remote locations and create a wild camp sympathetic to the environment.

Our location, whilst wild, is quickly accessible and offers a wide range of possibilities. For those with an eye for wild life we have regularly seen Red Kites, Ospreys, Buzzards, native Red and Roe Deer & sign of Otters. At night we have heard the screech of Barn Owls and the Tawny Owl ‘Twit Twoo’.

This course is run jointly by Dan @ DCOutdoors and RedOakBushcrafts.

Subjects Covered:

Day One:

  • Meeting: we will meet at the put in and give an overview of the canoes, paddles and safety considerations, packing* for on the water before getting on to the water and guiding you through basic tandem paddling skills to ensure you are comfortable and can control the craft before we head off.

  • Paddling: once loaded we will head off down an easy wide river before entering the loch. As our horizon widens we will discuss how we can read the terrain to aid choose of camp locations.

  • Camp: at our first nights camp we will will get all hands on setting up the group shelter with sufficient time for you to setup your chosen sleep system, tarp & hammock* or tent* are ideal. We will guide you through creating a campfire for cooking dinner, storage of kit and creating a toilet area all with due regard for Leave No Trace principles (we want to leave our camp location as we find it or in a better condition). Even washing up has a system to follow to ensure we reduce our impact on the land we use. While in camp we will look at gathering and processing an appropriate amount of fuel for the fire using folding saws and axes as appropriate to the size of fuel. We will also gather materials to take to camp two to utilise for skills workshops such as friction fire lighting.

  • Dinner: all hands make light work when it comes to dinners preparation of a good hearty and filling meal.

  • Relax: a relaxing evening around the campfire before bedding down.

Day Two:

  • Striking camp: we will set off to our second nights camp via a couple islands again working on tandem paddling skills. Making camp early to allow time for setting up the group shelter, campfire area, toileting and personal camp areas will allow for plenty of time during the afternoon to concentrate on a range of skills. Our two camp areas are totally different types of woodland which allow you to understand more about the range of trees and resources available to us as we journey through the landscape.

  • Skills: with two instructors on the course we can split to work on a wide range of skills. Dan will take solo canoe skills session and we will look at a range of bushcraft skills which can include basic fire lighting to friction fire lighting, safe knife techniques, natural cordage, identifying plants, trees and tracks or sign of any wildlife.

  • Dinner: again will be all hands on to fill the stomachs after a busy day.

Day Three:

  • Time: to consolidate the skills you want to work on, either on land or water. We will have plenty of time to work on individual skills, may be set you a challenge with the skills you have learnt before we head back to civilisation.

Additional Skills:

  • Wind: should conditions allow we will also look at improvised rafting and rigging of a makeshift sail to aid expedition travel and save all important energy.

Notes: A comprehensive kit list will be provided prior to the course. Items marked with an Asterix * above mean we have a selection of equipment that can be rented for the course at a low cost so you don’t need to go out and buy loads of new kit. A list will be provided prior to the course plus we try to hold a couple of on-line meetings to discuss the course, concerns and any kit requirements to try and ensure you are as prepared and comfortable as possible before the course.

Additional Notes: We will aim to be in the Dumfries and Galloway area, however weather conditions may dictate that we have to move the location. Also with the extremes of weather we have started to experience we may find that open fires may not be possible.

Suitable for:

This course is aimed at adults and accompanied mid / late teens.

  • I attended a great three day introduction to canoeing and bushcraft skills with a very nice small group of 5 people. We went to Dumfries & Galloway a great location for Canoeing and wild camping. We learned how to responsibly set up a new base camp each day and to make fires (without matches) for cooking over and made tools to use. Dan (canoeing) and Peter (bushcraft) were both good company and experts in their field. They are very patient teachers and keen to encourage as I was certainly very nervous when the course began. We left the Loch without a trace of our camps. It was great to learn new skills, meet new people and really appreciate nature. I would not hesitate to recommend both Dan and Peter for any activity in their field of expertise.

  • My son and I went on a bushcraft trip for a weekend led by Peter. This was a brilliant experience and we had a lot of fun. As beginners, we learned many new skills and have come away with a new-found confidence. If you're looking to have a great connecting with nature and exploring new bushcraft skills, then RedOakBushcrafts is the way to go. I can't wait to get out in the middle of nowhere again.

Both are lovely, easy going bestowers of knowledge with a splash of humour thrown in. Activities were tailored to requests. Fabulouso!!

  • Had an amazing adventure with Peter @redoakbushcrafts and Dan @dancrawfordoutdoors cruising down the loch on a mini canoe and bushcraft expedition. Worth it for the views alone but we also had stunning weather and top notch teachers! 10 / 10

  • Great value for money, when you saw what the kids learnt and how much fun we all had.

I thought it was pitched brilliantly for the age of the children, more challenging and more involved than I was expecting and much better for it. The way you managed to get 7 children all safely having a go at starting their own fires... meanwhile the big fire getting toasty for the marshmallows etc, the perfect way to end a party. We could have had fun for 4 hours easily, it felt a shame to end.

  • I had a great time on the Level 1 Bushcraft course!

The weather was miserable but Peter was attentive and good humoured, always had a brew on over the fire and made sure that the activities could be done under the canopy as well as in the rain!

Learnt lots of new skills and Peter told us about the benefits of various trees and bushes without it being dry. Peter also took photos and gave us access to the box so we could re-live the memories from the comfort of the sofa! I hope his new woodland offers even more!

Hannah, Introduction to Bushcraft 1 day course

  • Thank you so much for today. It was wonderful - I don't think it could have been better.

Callum was going to phone you to say thank you but he fell asleep!!

Laura Hill, Introduction to Bushcraft Day

  • Bushcraft isn’t all about fire but we all know that’s the most rewarding skill to learn; I have since gone on to make fire by bow drill on my own after this course!

I was bought a day course from my sister for a Christmas present to attend Red Oak Bushcraft day course and I only have positive praise for the course and Peter, the instructor. The course was organised but relaxed and Peter was never far away to offer advice when required. I learnt a lot for a relatively short Bushcraft course.

Graham Chesterfield, Introduction to Bushcraft 1 day course

  • All of the students were super proud of themselves because they could light fire without matches and told their teachers and friends how it’s done!

M Lomas, Buxton Community School, Introduction to Bushcraft Day

  • You were brilliant company, and a brilliant bush craft aficionado!

Just wanted to say thank you so much for such a fantastic day!! We all enjoyed every minute of it - both us adults the bigger kids and even Gracie! The kids started the fires each night in our cottage with the fire steels and we all now are professional fire starters so thanks for those skills too!

    Kirsty Collings, Family Bushcraft Day

  • A really fun way to spend some quality family time, thanks!

We went on a fantastic family bushcraft day with Red Oak Bushcrafts. It was really well paced day that the whole family (my wife & I and our 2 children aged 6 & 7) thoroughly enjoyed. The kids were never bored and stayed well engaged while we felt that we were also learning something worthwhile.

    John Hobson, Family Bushcraft Day

  • The brownies had a great time firelighting in the woods!

They had to use their communication and teamwork skills to enable them to light their own little fires. After the initial whole group instruction, the leaders took the time to show each group how to practice and develop their firelighting skills. It was a very informal setting but they still covered literacy and numeracy skills and also re-enforced manners from the brownies! The brownies got to toast their marshmallows at the end and sing a campfire song. Definitely be back!
